The map above shows the most popular Netflix show in each of the 50 United States, according to research done by HighSpeedInternet.com. They describe their methodology this way:
Our team took the top 75 TV shows on Netflix, cross referenced the shows with Google Trends data, and determined which series was most likely to be streamed on devices near you.
There are regional trends to be seen in the data. The Southwest, where I live, likes Orange Is the New Black and Narcos, shows about drugs, prison and crime. There’s still a bit of the Wild West in our blood. The Southeast loves its high drama and, well, scandal, with Scandal and Bloodline as the runaway favorites. The Northeast, where I’m from, loves a female-led romantic comedy, with a side of crime and scandal. The West Coast has its favorite quirky comedies. Portlandia, set in Portland, is Oregon’s favorite, while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend takes California and Washington.
The rest of the country is a mishmash of tastes. Colorado, with its progressive politics, likes House of Cards, as does Washington, DC’s suburb, Virginia. Wyoming likes iZombie. North Dakota and Hawaii both prefer The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Television makes strange bedfellows.
Jane the Virgin is the #1 Netflix show in Kansas. I wonder if that will stay true after their recent abortion storyline.
The popularity of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on the coasts helps explain why The CW has renewed the show twice despite perpetually low ratings. The four states its favorited in, NY, California, Massachusetts, and Washington, have a combined population of ~73 million people, or about 23% of the US population. That’s a lot of potential streaming. And there’s no electoral college to dilute the impact of those votes.

I was surprised that Jessica Jones and Luke Cage didn’t show up anywhere. Maybe they came in number 2. Stranger Things as well, that show gets talked about everywhere. I haven’t watched it yet. I’m thinking about recapping season 1 after The OA, before season 2 starts.
