Midnight, Texas Season 2 Episode 7: Resting Witch Face Recap

By the time we’re done watching episode 7, “Resting Witch Face”, the sleepy little town of Midnight, Texas has been turned upside down. Its darkest secrets have been exposed, friends and enemies have switched places, and another character has been lost. With only two episodes left following this one, the show is preparing its stage for a huge season finale.

As the episode begins, Joe is still out looking for Chuy, who is out of control and in his demon form. Walker has followed them. Fiji is hiding just how much her new affiliation with dark magic has affected her. Patience and Kai are supposedly dealing with the aftermath of the hotel being used as the epicenter of the town’s troubles in the previous episode.

And Manfred is still standing on his front porch, in tears, after watching Creek’s ghost disappear in flames. After a moment, he snaps into action and goes looking for Kai, who’s more than ready for a fight. They meet out in the street, shouting threats at each other. Kai tries to take Manfred’s powers from him, against his will. Only Patience is surprised. Lem stops Kai, then Patience takes him back to the hotel. Manfred tells everyone else that he saw Creek’s ghost.

Travelers Season 3 Episode 2: Yates Recap

Now that the worst of 001’s mess is cleaned up, the team moves on to a more normal mission and Mac gets a new partner, FBI Agent Yates. Neither is thrilled with the situation. They are ordered to protect a TV pundit who spreads fake news and has latched onto the Travelers as a good source of inflammatory rumors to keep his fanbase riled up. Some fans take the rumors too seriously and pull off a tragic attack on a candidate for Congress and his wife.

The Travelers and their significant others continue to deal with the fall out from the kidnapping. David, Kat and Jeff have been through multiple traumatic experiences, some at the hands of people they trusted and care about. The memory inhibitor might work for a mind wipe, but, as we were already seeing with David and Kat in episode 1, the physical, muscular memories of fighting back during an assault are still carried by the body. And, as Carly tried to point out, for David and Kat, the erased 24 hours is just the tip of the iceberg, as far as evidence that something is wrong and that their partners have changed.

Travelers Season 3 Episode 1: Ilsa Recap

Are we ready for season 3 of Travelers, kids???

Netflix and Brad Wright (the Stargate franchise) have dropped 10  new episodes of the time traveling, body swapping science fiction drama. Travelers stars Eric McCormack (Will and Grace) and a cast of young Canadian actors which includes MacKenzie Porter, Nesta Cooper, Jared Abrahamson, Reilly Dolman, Patrick Gilmore and Jen Spence.

It always feels like a long wait between seasons for Netflix shows that drop their entire seasons at once, but the wait was actually a little less than a year this time, for those of us who are outside Canada. Because Canadians now will also be watching Travelers on Netflix, instead of the Showcase network, they had a little extra wait.

But, enough chitchat. Let’s talk about the episode!

Season 1 begins in a hospital room, with a woman we will come to know as FBI agent Joanne Yates, sitting by the bedside of her dying mother. Her mother is unconscious, but then her eyes open and she turns her head to her daughter. She says, “Joanne, I want you to listen to me carefully.”

Next we see the Traveler team and the significant others who were kidnapped by Vincent at the end of last season (001, Season 2 Episode 12) riding together in an old school bus. The significant others are unconscious, except for Grace, who doesn’t need her memories altered, since she’s a Traveler. Grant remembers Kat slapping him as she rejected him, after learning he wasn’t really the man she married. He asks the bus driver to slow down, so the bumps don’t wake up the sleeping passengers.

Midnight, Texas Season 2 Episode 6: No More Mr. Nice Kai Recap

Midnight, Texas is a weird show. It’s fun. It’s sexy. With all of those shirtless men and relationship plotlines, it’s clearly aimed at women. It’s based on a series of books by Charlaine Harris, who is a famous and successful woman.

Unlike True Blood and the Midnight, Texas books, this TV series kills off its female characters right and left. In episode 6, Creek returns to Midnight, only to be fridged by the end of the episode. Time after time this season, we’ve watched the women be killed or duped, while the men leave town alive, or overcome whoever cons them. After the deaths of Creek, Lyric, Sequoia, and Mary’s mother, Sheila (just to name a few off the top of my head), will the Rev and Mary the baby weretiger’s father be returning Midnight to be murdered in episode 7, and will Olivia’s father die the week after that, to help balance the scales?

This show’s history suggests that a woman from Midnight will sacrifice and be punished in some major way before the end of the season. It will probably be Fiji, with Patience as the dark horse coming up strong from the outside. Trace Lysette’s character Celeste will likely be brought back to die. Fiji has already given up her heart, and the aunt who raised her, to the dark side, but the town will rescue Bobo’s true love. She’ll be contrite for overreaching and daring to think she could handle dark magic as a mere woman (of color).

Netflix’s Transfers: Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

In episode 3, Florian digs deep into the realities of Sylvain Bernard’s life and world. After finding out in episode 2 that Sylvain took part in the beating of political enemies with Gabe, Florian realizes that he needs to find out as much as he can about the life he’s taken over. To this end, he acquires the recordings of his sessions with Sister Viviane and he tries to get to know Sylvain’s son. Both share information about Sylvain he isn’t sure he wants to hear.

Sylvain’s grown son, Fabrice, is involved with an organized illegal transfer business. Fabrice’s job is to lure an unsuspecting young woman into a relationship, then, once the client has approved her, trick her into becoming a transfer for a famous pianist. This transfer is meant to show us how specific and open the very wealthy can be with their transfers, despite the fact that the procedure amounts to murder.

Thomas is hospitalized for his injuries, which has Florian and Sophie on edge. Liza hangs around the hospital to keep tabs on them. Eventually, she goes to meet with Fausto, to make some financial arrangements that she can’t make as a child. Liza makes another visit to an old friend, with disturbing consequences. But this time, we find out who is hiding inside Liza’s skin.

Childhood has its benefits and drawbacks, even for a transfer.

Netflix’s Transfers: Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

In episode 2, Florian learns more about Sylvain Bernard and the plight of the transfers, as he works the case of two transfers who’ve escaped from the Transfer Center. He and Béatrice search for a missing man who was a young Chinese paraplegic. He had a legal, therapeutic transfer into the body of an able-bodied young white man. Now, he faces prejudice from his family and the community.

Florian also continues his reunion with Sophie and his children, with mixed results. He spends an evening with the family, which goes well. He and Sophie try being intimate, which is a disaster. They both need more time to adjust to Florian’s new situation.

As Sylvain’s coworkers try to figure out the changes in him, we learn that he wasn’t universally liked. We also learn that he had some questionable ethics. We get to know the members of the BATI better, and visit the Transfer Center, where the people they arrest are sent. As part of the investigation, this episode gives us our first look into the world of underground illegal transfers.

As episode 2 begins, Liza, the girl from the end of episode 1, ties a ribbon around her ponytail, then surveys the rest of her hair ornaments, of which there are many. They all disgust her.

She can hear her parents arguing downstairs about the changes they’ve noticed in her. Mom thinks she’s a transfer. Dad thinks their little girl is just growing up.

They aren’t the first parents to wonder if their preteen child is a changeling. In this case, they’re correct.

Liza takes care of “her” parents to ensure their silence, then eats breakfast as their blood drips onto the carpet.

Midnight, Texas Season 2 Episode 5: Drown the Sadness in Chardonnay Recap

The intense spellwork continues from last episode in the new episode of Midnight, Texas, and Fiji isn’t the only one practicing. Guests in Midnight, who may or may not be welcome, also dabble in magic spells.

Another magical practitioner, Kai, returns home with his “assistants”, Lyric and Sequoia, in tow. Even though Kai’s wife, Patience, is tucked in bed with Manfred when Kai calls to let her know he’s back, there don’t seem to be any bad feelings between them. But soon there is a dead assistant, Sequoia, in the lobby. Manfred’s initial investigation makes him suspicious of Kai.

The fact that Kai never releases the supernatural energy he absorbs, which has bothered me all season, is finally addressed, in a big way.

Netflix’s Transfers Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Transfers (Transferts) is a French science fiction-thriller series from the Arte network, which aired in November, 2017. The entire 6 episode series, which was created and written by Patrick Benedek and Claude Scasso, is now streaming on Netflix. Transfers won Best French Series and Best Actor (for star Arieh Worthalter) at the 2017 Séries Mania Festival, an international festival. The series was filmed in Belgium.

Transfers follows the story of Florian Bassot, a down to earth cabinetmaker and married father of two. Florian goes into a five year coma after suffering a swimming accident. He’s woken up from his coma by his wife Sophie’s uncle, Dr Vautier, who has transferred his mind into the body of another man, anti-transfer paramilitary officer Sylvain Bernard.

Sylvain was shot in the shoulder, but died from a reaction to the anesthetic used in his surgery to remove the bullet. His doctor kept his death a secret, and brought him to the transfer center for Dr Vautier to use in his experiments. Florian is confused when he awakens and sees his own dead body on the next table.

Since no one knows Sylvain is braindead, and everyone thinks Florian is braindead, Florian/Sylvain must assume Sylvain’s life as a violent officer in the anti-transfer police, the BATI. He’s forced to try to convince the people who were closest to Sylvain that he has amnesia, while navigating the world of illegal underground transfers and organized crime, as well as attempting to secretly rekindle his marriage to Sophie and reconnect with his children.

All while trying to avoid being identified as an illegal transfer, arrested, and interned in the transfer center for life.

Netflix’s Transfers: Season 1 Review

Transfers (or Transferts) is a 6 episode science fiction-thriller series, produced in France, which is now streaming on Netflix. The series aired in France in November, 2017, after having won Best French Series and Best Actor (for star Arieh Worthalter) at the 2017 Séries Mania Festival, an international festival. Transfers was created and written by Patrick Benedek and Claude Scasso.

Transfers takes place in the near future in a generic French city. Florian Bassot, a woodworker and family man, drowns while boating with his wife and children. He wakes up after having been in a coma for 5 years, and finds himself in another man’s body. While he was asleep, body swapping technology was developed, legalized, and then made illegal again two years later.

His wife, Sophie, never gave up on Florian, and arranged to have his mind transferred into the body of Sylvain Bernard, a brutal member of the anti-transfer police force, known as the BATI. Sylvain was shot in the shoulder, but died during surgery from a reaction to the anesthetic. Even though transfers are illegal, Sophie’s uncle, Dr Vautier, is a major researcher in the field, so he was able to secretly help her and Florian.

There is a thriving black market in illegal transfers and the kidnapping of young healthy people for their bodies has become a crime wave. An anti-transfer offshoot of the Catholic church has grown up around a young, charismatic priest named Father Luc, who believes that transfers are doomed by God. Father Luc uses technology to his benefit in slightly unscrupulous ways, and has an order of fanatical bald nuns who follow him. Father Luc also has a wealthy patron, Dangeac, who has supported his work from the beginning.

Manifest Season 1 Episode 9: Dead Reckoning Recap

Well, the Fall Finale of Manifest certainly lived up to its name, Dead Reckoning. There were real and metaphorical deaths, though it wasn’t a Walking Dead or Game of Thrones style bloodbath. I’d like to thank the Angel of the Waters for that. There were a few minutes where that looked entirely possible, but then Grace calmed down. 😘

We learned a lot in this episode, especially about Fiona Clarke. She thinks quick in crisis. She doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty. If she wants to, she can provide safe houses, and probably many other resources, for the passengers. She probably isn’t as outraged about the way her research is being used as she should be, if Saanvi’s reaction to Autumn’s injuries is anything to go by.

And she’s very, very willing to take sole responsibility for 10 fugitives who have been declared dead or missing, are severely injured, have no other friends or relatives to miss them, and who have developed psychic abilities from experiments based on her work.

Did she ask Saanvi to meet them at the safe house to provide medical care for the passengers? No. Did she tell Ben she’d text him the location of the safe house? No. Did she grab a big stack of the paperwork that was still in the lab? Yes.

I believe that Fiona has been playing the other passengers from the beginning. Either she was working with the Singularity Project or she was working for another government faction (DARPA), but took advantage of Ben and Vance’s raid on the secret experimental site to screw the government agencies over and kidnap the test subjects. She intends to continue her work on her own terms, completely off the radar. Or, she just helped DARPA steal the experiments from the CIA, because DARPA offered her better terms.
