I don’t recognize the city, so if anyone does, let me know. Is it Vancouver or Seattle of the present or future? Somewhere else?

Netflix’s Transfers: Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

Trans102Bea&FlorDoShots

In episode 2, Florian learns more about Sylvain Bernard and the plight of the transfers, as he works the case of two transfers who’ve escaped from the Transfer Center. He and BĂ©atrice search for a missing man who was a young Chinese paraplegic. He had a legal, therapeutic transfer into the body of an able-bodied young white man. Now, he faces prejudice from his family and the community.

Florian also continues his reunion with Sophie and his children, with mixed results. He spends an evening with the family, which goes well. He and Sophie try being intimate, which is a disaster. They both need more time to adjust to Florian’s new situation.

As Sylvain’s coworkers try to figure out the changes in him, we learn that he wasn’t universally liked. We also learn that he had some questionable ethics. We get to know the members of the BATI better, and visit the Transfer Center, where the people they arrest are sent. As part of the investigation, this episode gives us our first look into the world of underground illegal transfers.

As episode 2 begins, Liza, the girl from the end of episode 1, ties a ribbon around her ponytail, then surveys the rest of her hair ornaments, of which there are many. They all disgust her.

She can hear her parents arguing downstairs about the changes they’ve noticed in her. Mom thinks she’s a transfer. Dad thinks their little girl is just growing up.

They aren’t the first parents to wonder if their preteen child is a changeling. In this case, they’re correct.

Liza takes care of “her” parents to ensure their silence, then eats breakfast as their blood drips onto the carpet.

Netflix’s Transfers Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

70242e2ad46e3884e31f47a475e6a2d0a80b4fe2

This is a recap. My review of Transfers Season 1 is HERE.

Transfers (Transferts) is a French science fiction-thriller series from the Arte network, which aired in November, 2017. The entire 6 episode series, which was created and written by Patrick Benedek and Claude Scasso, is now streaming on Netflix. Transfers won Best French Series and Best Actor (for star Arieh Worthalter) at the 2017 Séries Mania Festival, an international festival. The series was filmed in Belgium.

Transfers follows the story of Florian Bassot, a down to earth cabinetmaker and married father of two. Florian goes into a five year coma after suffering a swimming accident. He’s woken up from his coma by his wife Sophie’s uncle, Dr Vautier, who has transferred his mind into the body of another man, anti-transfer paramilitary officer Sylvain Bernard.

Sylvain was shot in the shoulder, but died from a reaction to the anesthetic used in his surgery to remove the bullet. His doctor kept his death a secret, and brought him to the transfer center for Dr Vautier to use in his experiments. Florian is confused when he awakens and sees his own dead body on the next table.

Since no one knows Sylvain is braindead, and everyone thinks Florian is braindead, Florian/Sylvain must assume Sylvain’s life as a violent officer in the anti-transfer police, the BATI. He’s forced to try to convince the people who were closest to Sylvain that he has amnesia, while navigating the world of illegal underground transfers and organized crime, as well as attempting to secretly rekindle his marriage to Sophie and reconnect with his children.

All while trying to avoid being identified as an illegal transfer, arrested, and interned in the transfer center for life.

Netflix’s Transfers: Season 1 Review

*This is a review of Season 1. Recaps of individual episodes can be found HERE and on the Home Page as they are published.*

Transfers (or Transferts) is a 6 episode science fiction-thriller series, produced in France, which is now streaming on Netflix. The series aired in France in November, 2017, after having won Best French Series and Best Actor (for star Arieh Worthalter) at the 2017 Séries Mania Festival, an international festival. Transfers was created and written by Patrick Benedek and Claude Scasso.

Transfers takes place in the near future in a generic French city. Florian Bassot, a woodworker and family man, drowns while boating with his wife and children. He wakes up after having been in a coma for 5 years, and finds himself in another man’s body. While he was asleep, body swapping technology was developed, legalized, and then made illegal again two years later.

His wife, Sophie, never gave up on Florian, and arranged to have his mind transferred into the body of Sylvain Bernard, a brutal member of the anti-transfer police force, known as the BATI. Sylvain was shot in the shoulder, but died during surgery from a reaction to the anesthetic. Even though transfers are illegal, Sophie’s uncle, Dr Vautier, is a major researcher in the field, so he was able to secretly help her and Florian.

There is a thriving black market in illegal transfers and the kidnapping of young healthy people for their bodies has become a crime wave. An anti-transfer offshoot of the Catholic church has grown up around a young, charismatic priest named Father Luc, who believes that transfers are doomed by God. Father Luc uses technology to his benefit in slightly unscrupulous ways, and has an order of fanatical bald nuns who follow him. Father Luc also has a wealthy patron, Dangeac, who has supported his work from the beginning.

Travelers: Netflix Announces Release Date for Season 3

SwirlyTravelersS3Poster

After what feels like a very long wait, but actually wasn’t, Netflix has FINALLY announced the release date for season 3 of their science fiction time travel series Travelers. Prior seasons of the show, which stars Eric McCormack, were shown weekly on the Canadian network Showcase before being released all at once to the rest of the world on Netflix. After Showcase decided to back out of its part in producing Travelers season 3, Netflix took over production completely, so everyone will get the show at the same time this year.

And when will that be? I’ll let the Travelers Twitter do the honors:

Upcoming Supernatural Shows Part 1: Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina [Videos]

chilling-adventures-of-sabrina

Halloween is almost upon us and it’s time for some witchy fun! Next week, on Friday October 26, two relatively lighthearted supernatural series will join the pack. NBC’s Midnight, Texas, based on the book series by Charlaine Harris, author of True Blood/the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, will return for season 2. And the entire first season of the Riverdale quasi spin off The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, from the same team who brought Archie, Veronica and Bughead to life, will debut on Netflix the same day.

In this post, let’s look at Sabrina, then I’ll make a second post for Midnight, Texas.

238px-chilling_adventuresof_sabrina_issue_2Sabrina is based on the teenage witch from the comics, most specifically from the comic series of the same name written by creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is also the showrunner for the CW’s Riverdale. It’s not connected to the 90s sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart, though I imagine the writers won’t be able to resist throwing in some inside jokes.

The show stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman, a half human-half witch teenager who has a big decision to make on her 16th birthday. Lucy Davis plays Hilda Spellman, the more maternal of Sabrina’s two aunts, who act as her guardians. Miranda Otto plays Zelda Spellman, a fierce, protective witch who wants Sabrina to follow in her footsteps as a devotee of the Dark Lord. (Guess JK Rowling doesn’t own that phrase.) Ross Lynch is Harvey Kinkle, Sabrina’s sweet, clueless, human boyfriend, who has no idea what’s really going on in the town of Greendale, where Sabrina’s chilling adventures take place. The cast is rounded out by Jaz Sinclair, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Richard Coyle, and Tati Gabrielle, who play various friends, allies and enemies of Sabrina.

Updated 10/25/18: Added video of Sabrina’s comic book-style opening credits.

Maniac Season 1 Episode 1: The Chosen One! Recap

maniac-poster-wide

I’ve gone back and forth on whether to write about Maniac, Netflix’s new black comedy which was created by Patrick Somerville and Cary Joji Fukunaga and stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, but I decided to wait until I’d watched the whole thing before making a decision. During the first few episodes, I thought I wouldn’t, because it reminded me of Legion and other surreal, but aimless, shows that I’ve been burned by in the past. Professional reviewers were even comparing Maniac to those shows. But as the season continued, Maniac became something else.

Maniac is a surrealistic, quirky, scifi black comedy that can get very dark and can go off on tangents that don’t make sense at first. It’s also, at least for now, a limited series, which means it’s written as a self-contained story. And what Maniac is, at its heart, is a lovely, optimistic, long form, indie romantic comedy, with a beginning, middle and end. Both indie films and works of surrealism have difficulty coming to a satisfying conclusion (and sometimes even commercial works do, looking at you, Castle Rock S1!), so the ending of Maniac is a major accomplishment, in my book.

I kind of fell in love with this show, and it appears that I’m going to have writer’s block until I write about it. There are 3 other partial recaps in my drafts folder that are going nowhere right now, so let’s give Maniac a try, shall we?

Like most Netflix shows, and many other shows as well, the first three episodes serve as an extended introduction to the season. In episode 1, we get to know Owen Milgrim (rhymes with pilgrim, which is a seeker or wanderer), played with depressed, understated misery by Jonah Hill. You feel like he’s always on the verge of crying, and it’s taken a monumental amount of strength for him to reach this point in his life. He’s been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but refuses treatment.

The Innocents Season 1 Episode 8: Everything. Anything. Recap and Season 1 Speculation/Analysis

mv5bodmynti2mtcwnf5bml5banbnxkftztgwntgxodiynjm-_v1_sx1777_cr001777999_al_

Everything. Anything., the season 1 finale, begins much the same way as the season premiere did, with the camera floating across the fjord to give the audience a panoramic view of the beauty and isolation of Sanctum’s setting. As with the premiere, Bendik’s Halvorson’s plans are spiraling out of control and he’s trying desperately to stop the chaos. Sanctum is his kingdom, and he rules it with an iron fist covered by a velvet glove. But even on an isolated island, the past has a way of coming back to haunt you.

Live by the sword, die by the sword, as they say.

The shots of the fjord gradually transition to a montage which recaps the season, reminding the viewer where we are now and how we got here. Sohn’s The Wheel plays over the montage. It has a pretty melody and vocals interrupted by staccato silences that sound to me a lot like a record skipping. The contrasts in the song fit the contrasts in the show’s physical and emotional environment well. Every character’s life has been interrupted and rendered out of sync by the events of the season.

On a side note, John is still naked in the morning. I find it hilarious that everyone else at Sanctum is wrapped in multiple sweaters and layers from head to toe, 24/7, but they got John naked as soon as he stepped onto the island. The harem’s been deprived of a broad-shouldered specimen like him for ages and they’re going to take advantage of it. While they launder his clothes, of course. Slowly.

The Innocents Season 1 Episode 7: Will You Take Me, Too? Recap

mv5bmji2ndg0mzmwmf5bml5banbnxkftztgwodayodiynjm-_v1_sy1000_cr0015011000_al_

In this episode, we finally discover the meaning of Lewis’ oft repeated question, the episode title, “Will You Take Me, Too?” When June and Elena are reunited, Elena’s actions on the night of the Penines 5 are revealed, as is her connection to Lewis. It’s hard to know whether to count Elena as a perpetrator or another victim.  She didn’t have premeditated intent, but should she have had better control?

We also inch, ever so slowly, closer to understanding Ben’s intentions. We’ll have to wait until the finale to find out exactly what his plans for June are, but he definitely has plans to use June to save Runa. I think he wants June to shift into Runa indefinitely, the way she shifted into Elena and was becoming indistinguishable from her. With June wearing Runa’s body, he’d have the best of both worlds. Presumably the June version of Runa wouldn’t have dementia, and they could have shapeshifter children together.

I knew someone else gave Kam the idea of shifting into another person and staying them forever.

As the penultimate episode of the season, this episode continues to move the chess pieces into place for the finale. John and Harry make it to Sanctum, but John is hurt. While Harry recommits to June, she’s more scared than ever after shifting into Elena and discovering how bad things could get. She can’t trust that the two of them are enough to keep her from hurting someone anymore.

The Innocents Season 1 Episode 6: Not the Only Freak in Town Recap

In episode 6 of The Innocents, the men get weepy and the women go drinking. Left alone on the island, Runa, Sigrid and Elena break the rules and share some female bonding time with Runa’s homebrew. Harry goes home to his family and has a tearful reunion, then discovers some distressing information about Lewis. He runs to the farm to share it with Ryan and John, leaving Ryan teary-eyed as well. June meets the mysterious Dr Halvorson, and agrees to go to Norway with him. One of the first things he does is take away her phone, cutting off her access to anyone else. Before they leave London.

The groups and alliances are reshuffled in this episode. Some much needed communication happens between multiple characters, building bridges between them. By the end of the episode, the characters have moved into position for the final act.

After Harry walks away from her, June walks back to Kam’s flat in the sunshine, with her beautiful hair glowing in the sun. She looks sad and lost, but her hair will carry her through this disaster. That hair is survivor’s hair.
