Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 7: I Saw the Sign Recap

Episode 7 of Roswell, New Mexico, I Saw the Sign, shows the fallout from the revelations of episode 6 and from the alien presence in Roswell since 1947. The picture of how every generation of humans has been affected since the spaceship crashed into the New Mexico desert is being revealed, and it’s already clear that very little good has come from the mini alien invasion. The aliens themselves haven’t fared any better than the humans, though there are still many questions left to be answered on both sides of the equation.

This is Maria’s episode, and we find out just which ‘ship she’s willing to go down with, after she raised Dido’s White Flag with Isobel in episode 4. Her mom, Mimi, has mental health issues which have proven undiagnosable, but Maria won’t give up on her. Mimi is obsessed with aliens, like so many in Roswell, but in her case, she’s also a psychic. It’s no coincidence that Maria mentioned White Flag to Isobel in particular. Whoever is scrambling Isobel’s brain is also scrambling Mimi’s, and probably the brains of all of the other lost women of Roswell: Rosa, Mrs Manes, Mrs Ortecho, and more that we don’t yet know about.

We watch two women get sent to the room with The Yellow Wallpaper this week. How many of the women I just listed are already there waiting for them? How many have been put someplace even worse, like the fiery crate Liz was forced into and the fiery car Rosa, Kate and Jasmine were put in?

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 6: Smells Like Teen Spirit Recap

In episode 6, Roswell, New Mexico goes back to the characters’ senior year to relive the events surrounding Rosa’s death. Along the way, we also find out the truth about Michael and Alex, Liz and Kyle, Max and Liz, Isobel and everyone, and which dress Liz ultimately wore to the prom. We also discover that Rosa and Liz’s very best friend Maria didn’t figure into their high school lives enough to be featured in this episode.

This is not okay. We were shown in a previous episode that on the night she died, Rosa stopped by the Wild Pony, the bar run by Maria’s mother at the time, to pick up a bottle of booze and avoid Isobel. Is that all Maria is to the rest of the gang? Someone to use when they need something?

I appreciate the reboot making Michael bi and having that form of representation. But Maria doesn’t need to disappear. The original character of Alex was still in the show when Michael was in a relationship with Maria. He was only written out because Colin Hanks had other offers and wanted to leave, not because the showrunners were ignoring him.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 5: Don’t Speak Recap

This week’s installment of Roswell, New Mexico, episode 5 of the season, titled Don’t Speak, features some major revelations, the death of a minor character, and Isobel running around the desert in her little black nightgown and knee-high tube socks, without shoes.

I really need to start a regular Isobel fashion watch section. Her clothing just keeps getting more fun, though I don’t know how they can top this week.

For now, let’s move on to the recap, and discuss fashion and all of the other exciting events of the week as they arise. The writers have outdone themselves with giving us juicy, juicy tidbits to chew on.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 4: Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? Recap

Roswell, NM 104 Michael, Max, Isobel

In episode 4 of Roswell, New Mexico, Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?, Max and the town deal with the consequences of his electromagnetic outburst at the end of episode 3. Power and cell service are down throughout the town, causing car accidents and medical emergencies. Since Kyle knows the truth about Max, he attempts to goad Max into taking some kind of action to help the hospital’s dying patients.

The investigation into Rosa’s death continues, with both Liz and Isobel investigating in their own ways. Liz gets in touch with Rosa’s ex-boyfriend, who gives her an important clue. Isobel exchanges psychic readings with Maria, and comes away with a new clue, but more confusion.

This episode finally gives us some decent Michael and Maria time, and, WOW. They have great chemistry. I think was my favorite episode yet, largely due to the amount of screentime their characters got, separately and together.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 3: Tearin’ Up My Heart Recap

Episode 3 of Roswell, New Mexico, Tearin’ Up My Heart, is a big improvement from episode 2, and puts the series back on track with what the pilot led me to expect. The show still has issues, but if it can avoid the WTF inconsistencies and the terrible characterizations from episode 2, along with so much blatant misogyny, it could develop into a compelling story of its own.

This week, the couples continue to play games with each other, which will get annoying very soon, especially in the case of Michael and Alex. If you want me to care about a couple, there has to be something there to actually care about. Max and Liz have been given montages and flashbacks, conversations between themselves and with others about their feelings and memories, and we’ve seen them take risks for each other. It’s been driven home that they have real feelings for each other but were forced apart.

Michael and Alex have had a few brief conversations, mostly made up of insult-filled arguments, and Alex had one short conversation with Maria in which he talked about Michael, but kept him anonymous. It looks like Alex uses Michael when he needs a boost to his self-esteem or to get off, then drops him when he comes to his senses. Why would I want Michael to be with a guy who doesn’t have a personality, has never publicly acknowledged their relationship, is embarrassed by Michael, and is psychologically abusive toward him?

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 2: So Much for the Afterglow Recap

So Much for the Afterglow is right. After an enjoyable pilot, Roswell, New Mexico comes crashing down to earth in episode 2. I had a lot of issues with this episode, but the biggest one was with Max Evans. If you watched the original series, you may know where this is going.

I hated the Tess/Max storyline in the original series, especially for how much it took away from Max and Liz’s story. I was hoping Roswell, New Mexico would never go there. I knew Max had been casually dating someone in this series, and was fine with it. But dating someone else while Liz was gone for ten years is totally different from being ready to get together with Liz one minute, then shagging his second choice ten minutes later.

I wasn’t ready for Max to leave Liz and go straight over to the Tess look-alike’s house for sex. I was really, really, really hoping to avoid that entire scenario, where he’s in love with Liz but inexplicably sleeping with the blonde. Yet here we are, in episode two. Very disappointing. For a number of reasons, which I’ll go into further later on.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 1: Pilot Recap

Roswell, New Mexico is The CW’s latest entry into the reboot and revival craze that’s brought back so many old TV shows, whether they should have been resurrected or not. As a fan of the original Roswell series, I had mixed feelings going into this version. After watching the pilot, I think that if viewers can focus on this version and leave behind expectations based on the original series, it’s an enjoyable show. Roswell, New Mexico has the potential to live up to some of the early promise that the original showed, before it turned into a charming mess.

We (Metamaiden and Metacrone) loved the original Roswell fiercely. We own the DVDs and have watched the entire 60 plus episode series ‘I don’t know how many’ times. Actually, we should probably write a Quick Review of the series and recommend essential episodes. Keep an eye out for that review. It’s HERE.

We also own the original Roswell High Series of 10 books by Melinda Metz. The original TV series was commissioned based on the first book, so the two series don’t have much in common beyond the basic premise.

What we’re trying to say here is twofold: This is a major fandom for us, and Roswell has always been a story with multiple versions. The novels and the original series were written at the same time. So which is the real cannon? Neither. The story works best if you’re open-minded about many things, from “mixed relationships” to different versions of stories about aliens to reinterpretations of beloved characters.
