Roswell, New Mexico Season 2 Episode 4: What If God Was One of Us? Recap

Roswell, New Mexico S2E3 Michael & Alex

This week on Roswell, New Mexico, Isobel uses her powers to help Rosa and Arturo reconnect. Alex and Michael’s investigation into the aftermath of the 1947 crash brings them to the Long ranch, where they run into a young relative of Wyatt’s, Forest, who shares the Long family’s legends about that time period. Kyle helps Liz acquire new equipment from the hospital, then wonders if he made the right decision. Cam confronts Jesse about her sister, Charlie, and he’s surprisingly open with her. This may not be as helpful as it you’d think.

I have a theory of my own about Jesse’s new state of mind.

But before I share it, Isobel needs to work a miracle.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 2 Episode 3: Good Mother Recap

Roswell, New Mexico S2E3 Lily Cowles as Isobel Evans

It’s Ladies Night on episode 3 of Roswell, New Mexico and the moms, aliens, and formerly dead all come out for it. Good Mother sees the return of Cam, Max’s police partner from season 1, and Mimi DeLuca, Maria’s missing mom. We also find out what happened to Michael’s mom on the night of the alien spaceship crash in 1947- she got to meet Jason Behr, Max from the original Roswell series, OMG!

Not to be outdone, current Max (Nathan Dean Parsons) finds a way to make himself useful again when Isobel gets into trouble. Also thanks to Max, Maria is finally, finally brought into the alien loop. It’s a good week for him, partly since he spends most of his time in the outfit Isobel wants to remember him in- a relaxed version of the tuxedo from her fundraiser the night they captured Noah.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 2 Episode 2: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Recap

Roswell, New Mexico S2E2 Isobel & Ann Evans Find Their Warrior Women

It’s a good day in Roswell to find your inner warrior Goddess, but a bad day for avoiding the alien zombie ghost of Max Evans or feeling nostalgic about family ties or the past in general. The best move for the whole gang is to move forward in their endeavors, even if moving forward also includes a little bit of moving backwards.

This week: after spending the day with her mother, Isobel makes a decision about her alien baby; Michael makes an attempt to get back into Maria’s good graces; Maria searches for her missing mother; Jesse Manes comes out of his medically induced coma with his sense of superiority intact; Liz tries a new experiment, which she hopes will help Max; and Rosa tries to cope with the racism and anger the rest of the town has been brewing for 11 years over the death of the 2 white girls in the car she was supposedly driving.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 2 Episode 1: Stay (I Missed You) Recap

Roswell, New Mexico S2E1 Ann Evans (Claudia Black) & Isobel Evans (Lily Cowles) at Noah's Funeral
Ann Evans (Claudia Black) & Isobel Evans (Lily Cowles) at Noah’s Funeral

There are alien zombie ghosts running around Roswell, New Mexico in season 2 and it’s glorious. Rosa (Amber Midthunder) is alive and not an alien zombie ghost, though she may develop similarities to one of those things if this show follows its predecessor. She and Isobel are both being haunted by Noah, but apparently for very different reasons.

Welcome to season 2 of the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, where the alien fun is ramping up to epic proportions.

Recap

Rosa is channeling Max’s memories of Noah and combining them with her own memories of Noah’s possession of Isobel, then turning them into nightmares. A worried Liz sends Rosa to now big brother Kyle to have her head examined. He discovers that Max healed all of Rosa’s afflictions. Her injuries from the accident are gone and she shows no signs of ever having done drugs.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 13: Recovering The Satellites Recap

Roswell, NM S1Ep13 You're Not Gonna Shoot Me2

So, that was a lively episode, y’all. There were deaths, rebirths, saviors proclaimed, religions explained, siblings revealed, lightning shooting from hands (told ya), medical comas induced, romances consummated and Liz still had time to identify the rare Libyan flower in Maria’s necklace.

And Ophiuchus came up again, which is very intriguing, since Noah used it to describe Max and himself, not himself and Rosa. Michael and Alex may be cosmic soulmates, but according to Noah, he and Max are also in a cosmic relationship. I think he was meant to be Max’s handler.

Max needs a Watcher or a Whitelighter. Use whatever title you want, but since female  prodigies always have them, the Roswell “Savior” can survive having one, too. He desperately needs guidance. It’s not clear that he can survive without it, based on his own actions.

The CW came through with good news, after the show left us with that cliffhanger last night. Roswell, New Mexico has been renewed for season 2. If you’ve been waiting to check the show out until you were sure it would continue, you’re all set. The entire season should be on Netflix next week.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 12: Creep Recap

RoswellNM S1Ep12 Max, Isobel& Michael

There are many ways to interpret the title of Roswell, New Mexico’s penultimate episode of its freshman (and perhaps only) season. “Creep” is most obviously meant to refer to Isobel’s wayward alien husband, Noah, who reveals some secrets in this episode, but holds others hostage, hoping to exchange them for his own life.

Then there’s our leading man, Maximo Evans. Always at least a bit of a violent creep, he outdoes himself with creepiness in this episode, from the way he dismisses Cam from his life by telling her she’s been a good “friend” after she’s just given up her job to save him and his loved ones, to the way he possessively fights with Noah for ownership of Liz and Isobel.

There’s the creepiness of Caulfield prison, a horror show worthy of the Nazis, where Michael finds and loses his mother and has his feelings about the nature of humanity confirmed. I’m not convinced that the explosion will kill the aliens inside the prison, but if that moment was all Michael has with his mother, I’ll support any and all killing sprees he embarks on. I can’t stand that they not only fridged an important female character (and the other aliens), and but they also used Michael and his mother as a plot device for Dramatic! Prefinale! Effect! What a waste of potential.

And now, by the way, we discover that Noah is, hilariously, an alien vampire who needs to feed on the life force of humans, and sometimes other aliens, to keep his body from deteriorating. That’s why I don’t think all of the aliens at Caulfield are dead. I think some will be rescued, and will be able to not just survive, but regain their lost youth, using the same method as Noah. You don’t introduce just one alien vampire, then kill him off and forget about the concept.

Especially not when you made your name in the Vampire Diaries franchise.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 11: Champagne Supernova Recap

mv5bnmrlmtzhowutmtgxnc00mtq5lweyywetzgfmmjfintm5otixxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymjywnda2mde40._v1_

In episode 11, Champagne Supernova, Roswell throws a party and captures a mind controlling alien. The women of Roswell work together to solve the episode’s mysteries, while Max and Michael fight their way through their lifelong issues. We also meet Grant Green’s identical twin Graham Green, who’s inherited the UFO Emporium and intends to make it bigger and better than ever.

Alex and Kyle are MIA, which means they’ve probably snuck off on an alien artefact hunt that we’ll see next week. Or the actors were left out to save money. You never know with Roswell’s writers’ room.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 10: I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing Recap

Roswell, NM S1Ep10 Max & Isobel Just Out of the Pod

In episode 10 of Roswell, New Mexico, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, the characters hunt down lost memories, retrieve Isobel from stasis, crack a secret code, and find other ways to reveal secrets to each other. Some hearts are made lighter, some are not. The secrets bring up as many new questions as they do answers.

Recap

Since Isobel was left in her pearly pink egg over the break, it’s only fair that we get right to setting her free in the first scene of this episode. Max coats his hand in dissolved silver, then reaches in and pulls her out. She’s disoriented, but quickly gets her bearings. They’re relieved to find she’s retained the memories she went into stasis with, so amnesia isn’t an automatic consequence of time in an alien pod.

Liz is there, with an antidote filled syringe at the ready. She gives Isobel about one minute to catch her breath. As soon as Isobel asks if they’ve found the cure, Liz strides forward, tells her they’re about to find out. She jams the syringe into Isobel’s chest, using the same vampire killing technique as Kyle.

They take Isobel back to Max’s house for a proper exam and some pampering. Isobel is upset when she learns they didn’t let her sleep through the next presidential election. Liz finds that all normal activity has returned to Isobel’s mitochondrial DNA. She hatched out of her egg an alien again.

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 9: Songs About Texas Recap

ros109c_bts_0646b

Before we get started, let me state my bias, straight out. Maria DeLuca (Heather Hemmens) is the best character on this show. No contest. If the writers disappear her again, or mistreat her too badly (that includes retconning her character to ruin her), I may riot, then stop watching.

Back to your regularly scheduled recap.

This week’s episode of Roswell, New Mexico, titled Songs About Texas, moved several giant steps closer to getting its Scooby gang together. Episode 9 was directed by Shiri Appleby, the original Liz on original Roswell, and was filled with callbacks to its predecessor.

Max, Michael, Liz and Maria accidentally end up together on a road trip to Texas to check out potential clues to an alien mystery. Relationship progress ensues. A Native American elder tells them about an alien who once lived on the reservation. These points are true of the current episode Songs about Texas, and the original series episodes 285 South and River Dog (S1 Eps 6&7).

Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 8: Barely Breathing Recap

Roswell, New Mexico 108 Michael and Max Visit Isobel in Psych Ward

Episode 8, of Roswell, New Mexico, Barely Breathing, is a very different episode from episode 7. In episode 7, characters and relationships broke down, and secrets took their toll. In episode 8, secrets are revealed and information is shared. New alliances are formed and characters begin to let their anger go. Isobel hits rock bottom, but is given a chance for rebirth. Alex Manes finds something he’s wanted for many years, but it may not benefit him in the long run.

And we finally meet Mama Evans, played by scifi veteran Claudia Black.

Recap

Isobel gets the opening voiceover this week:

“Safety is so easy to take for granted. Especially when you grow up loved, cherished, protected. Safety is a feeling you only value when it’s been stripped from you. When someone you trust spills your secrets, when someone invades your home, or when you’re a little girl staring at the stars in the desert one night and the devil tries to drag you into hell. Or worse, when the thing that makes you unsafe isn’t an invader at all. What do you do when the evil you fear is inside your own mind? When there may be no way to kill it without killing yourself?”
