A Discovery of Witches Season 2 Episode 6 Recap: In Which More Secrets Are Revealed

Disc of Witches S2Ep6 Matt, Philippe & Diana at Temple

Diana and Matthew spend episode 6 at Sept-Tours proving themselves to Philippe. In a visually stunning episode, Philippe makes sure Diana understands what she’s getting into by exposing her to Matthew’s Blood Rage and seeks to understand the rift he senses between himself and Matthew. Once he’s satisfied that Diana is worthy of Matthew and that the two are equally devoted to each other, he approves of their relationship and encourages them to fully mate.

Recap

Matthew and Philippe argue about why Philippe allowed the witch Champiers to threaten Diana so that she had no choice but to kill him in episode 5. Philippe felt it was essential to test Diana’s ability to take care of herself, since she already knows so many of the family secrets. He won’t allow Matthew to bring a weak-willed woman witch into the family who could compromise their safety at the slightest threat.

Once Diana gets involved in the argument, Philippe notices that she’s wearing the cherished ring he gave Ysabeau. Ysabeau wouldn’t part with the ring while he’s still living, which leads him to realize that he must be dead in the time they’ve come from. Matthew confirms his suspicion.

A Discovery of Witches Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: In Which Diana Meets Philippe

Disc of Witches S2Ep5 Phillippe 1

After leaving Gallowglass at Mont Saint-Michel, Diana and Matthew spend much of season 2 episode 5 traveling through 16th century France to Sept-Tours. Along the way, the stress of the journey and Matthew’s anxiety about seeing Philippe again affect their relationship. Once they reach Matthew’s ancestral home, Philippe is suspicious of Diana, but surprisingly honest with her.

Between this episode and the next, the biggest things that Matthew has been hiding from Diana are about to come out, kids. Grab your popcorn and lets get started.

Recap

We rejoin the gang on the row boat that’s dropping Matthew, Diana and Gallowglass off on the beach at Mont Saint-Michel, in northern France. Philippe has sent a welcoming party of armed men riding black horses to escort them to the de Clermont family stronghold at Sept-Tours. Matthew explains that the guards are meant to both protect them on the dangerous roads and to make sure they don’t change their minds about answering Philippe’s summons.

They say goodbye to Gallowglass, who is continuing on ahead of them to Emperor Rudolph’s court. He tells Diana, “Just follow the trail of vanquished enemies and satisfied women.” Then he warns Diana, again, to be careful not to lose Matthew or herself while with Philippe.

A Discovery of Witches Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: In Which Marcus Visits an Auction House

Disc of Witches S2Ep4 Phoebe & Marcus 1

Season 2 episode 4 is spent entirely in the present day, where the vicious killer vampire strikes again, causing concern among the de Clermonts as well as Gerbert and Domenico. Domenico continues his investigation into the murderer, which leads him to cross paths with Marcus.

Much of the episode follows Marcus as he attempts to make a purchase from a high end auction house for Ysabeau, then becomes romantically involved with Phoebe Taylor, a human associate at the auction house. He must reconsider his priorities as de Clermont secrets that he’s kept and those that that have been kept from him begin to take center stage in his life.

Recap

We begin back on the Oxford campus in the present day, following a young man (Tom Byrne) riding a bike. He reaches his destination and locks up his bike, then walks down a secluded alley. He’s startled by the noise when a vampire circles the block, trying to escape the threat. Before he’s gone more than a few steps, the vampire attacks him, moving almost faster than the eye can follow, biting and ripping at him savagely.

He turns to his religion to help him cope with the murder he committed in episode 2 and finds a new target for his anger. But he has to appease the Queen, who isn’t okay with his recent activities.

These troubles are offset by a visit to the Queen’s astrologer, Dr John Dee (Struan Rodger), who gives Matthew and Diana a lead on the location of the Book of Life, and a visit from Matthew’s vampire nephew. The long-awaited and much-anticipated Gallowglass (Steven Cree) is finally here!!

A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 2 Recap: In Which Matthew Visits a Daemon and Diana Is Betrayed

Disc of Witches S1Ep2 Peter & Diana at Library

In episode 2, Matthew and Diana go their separate ways for a bit. Matthew takes a trip to visit his daemon friend Hamish to hunt and gain some perspective. Diana continues her research while the other witches try to convince her to give them the Book of Life. We’re also introduced to the vampires of Venice, where the Congregation is located.

Recap

We begin the episode on location in Venice, Italy, home of the Congregation, with vampire Juliette Durand (Elarica Johnson) sipping an espresso at an outdoor cafe next to one of the canals while Haley Reinhardt’s version of White Rabbit plays. This is peak, atmospheric All Souls Trilogy, my friends. Drink it in. I’m writing this in late January, 2021, after almost a year in COVID lockdown. Shows like this, that give us beautiful views of the wider world without the troubling aspects of reality, are a lifeline right now.

Or maybe lifeline isn’t the right word, since we’re currently on vacation with a mentally unstable vampire. Chances are, as long as your name isn’t Matthew, you’ll be fine. 😘

Moonlight Season 1/ Full Series Review

Moonlight 2007 Poster

Before Alex O’Loughlin moved to Hawaii and became a cop, he was a vampire private investigator in LA. Moonlight was a 2007-08 vampire noir, 16 episode CBS series starring O’Loughlin, Jason Dohring (iZombie, Veronica Mars), Sophia Myles (A Discovery of Witches) and Shannon Sossamon (Wayward Pines, Sleepy Hollow). It was created by Ron Koslow and Trevor Munson. The entire season can currently be streamed for free on the CWSeed site.

Moonlight takes place in present day (2007) LA, where vampire Mick St John (Alex O’Loughlin) works as a private investigator who solves murders. He also keeps an eye on a young woman he rescued as a young child from a kidnapping more than 20 years ago, Beth Turner (Sophia Myles). Beth is now an intrepid investigative reporter for up and coming online journalism outfit Buzzwire. Though Beth remembers her kidnapping, she initially doesn’t know who Mick is or that he’s watching her.

Book vs Screen Review: A Discovery of Witches Season 1 vs Book 1

discovery-witches

It begins with absence and desire.

It begins with blood and fear.

It begins with a discovery of witches.

Both the book and the TV series A Discovery of Witches begin with this short poem, the key to the mystery that the All Souls Trilogy, by Deborah Harkness, spends solving. A Discovery of Witches is the first book in the urban fantasy series, which has now expanded beyond the original trilogy to include a fourth book. According to Deborah Harkness, several more installments, focusing on other characters and mysteries, are on the way.

A Discovery of Witches tells the story of Diana Bishop, a witch from a family of powerful witches in a world where there are three types of humanoid magical creatures: witches, vampires and demons. The creatures live secretly among humans, blending into normal human society. Under normal circumstances, members of each species spend time only with others of their own species. Intermarriage is strictly forbidden and even interspecies friendships are severely frowned upon.

Diana Bishop has always had difficulty wielding her magic. She turned away from the magical world almost completely after her parents died tragically when she was a child. She was raised in upstate NY by her mother’s sister, Sarah, and Sarah’s partner, Em. As an adult, she’s become a historian who is on the faculty and studies alchemy in the US at Yale and in the UK at Oxford. She sees herself as a non-magical person, but it overflows out of her at times when something unexpected happens, even though she is untrained in its use.

Book vs Screen Review: True Blood Season 1 vs Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

But First, A Brief, Non-Exhaustive Tour Through My Favorite Romantic Vampire Media

Though I have been writing reviews on this blog for more than three years, I have been keeping a dark secret from you, dear readers. I haven’t really been keeping the secret on purpose, but a lie of omission is still a lie, so please, try to forgive me. I don’t think this reveal will come as much of a shock to my regular readers.

The truth is, I have a deep, lifelong love of vampire romance. I’m open minded, and can consider other supernatural romances as well, but werewolves are so packminded that I question their devotion to their beloved. Ghosts seem so thin and superficial. Zombies are interested in brains, but I want more than just a relationship of the mind. Angels and demons both have to leave their beloveds in the lurch when they get called into service by the higher- and lower- powers they serve. A shapeshifter is an inconstant lover in so many ways, how could we ever develop trust?

There are exceptions: Oz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The medieval ghosts of Lynn Kurland’s paranormal romance novels. The sentient zombies of In the Flesh. The married angel-demon couple from Midnight, Texas, another Charlaine Harris story. And no one is more trustworthy than True Blood’s own shapeshifter, Sam Merlotte.

Midnight, Texas Season 2 Episode 9: Yasss, Queen Recap

NUP_184570_0636

Yasss, Queen, episode 9 of Midnight, Texas’ 2nd season, serves as both the season and the series finale. This season’s storylines are wrapped up in spectacular, over the top fashion. The producers are shopping the show to other networks, so it could get more seasons eventually, and the episode ends with set ups for the next season, but nothing that takes away from the satisfying conclusion that’s already been reached.

I’m hoping that Netflix will pick up the show, since it’s already filmed here in Albuquerque, where Netflix is creating its North American studio. Plus, Midnight would fit right in with Sabrina and Lucifer, which Netflix picked up after Fox dropped it.

Midnight, Texas Season 2 Episode 8: Patience Is a Virtue Recap

MV5BNTViZGRlNWEtZmFhZC00NjE0LTg2MDctZDdhMTQxNjFkMWFmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMjYwNDA2MDE@._V1_

With episode 8, Midnight, Texas goes off the rails, into full on camp. It’s an over the top episode, with over the top acting, villains, costumes, and even incest, one of the shocking TV sex crimes of choice for the last several years.

The Spanish Inquisition even gets a nod. And no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

The story picks up right where it left off, with Manfred struggling to remove Theophilus’ necklace. It’s stuck and only gets tighter when he tries to pull at it. He and Kai discuss who Patience screwed worse. Kai now realizes that his entire life has been a lie and that she’ll kill him along with everyone else, once she has what she wants. Manfred lost Creek and his body is going to become Theophilus’ new body. It’s a tough call, between them. Let’s just agree that Patience knows how to make sure that she’s not the one being taken advantage of.
