This crossover just keeps getting better and better. They’re already bringing together some of the best cast members from the four CW Berlantiverse shows and allowing these triple and quadruple threats to sing (and, dare we hope, dance? Some of them are amazing dancers, too. Go watch Grant Gustin’s Glee performances again. And Darren Criss can keep up.) Now they’re adding in original songs written by Rachel Bloom, of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Broadway darlings who wrote Dear Evan Hansen, Dogfight, and A Christmas Story, and who have now moved on to Hollywood to write the lyrics for Oscar nominated song City of Stars from La La Land. Can Pasek and Paul go for their EGOT all in one year?
Darren Criss, who is guest starring as the Music Meister, is also an Emmy-nominated songwriter for a song he wrote for Glee. Maybe he’ll get a shot at writing an original song for the episode as well? He’s written entire musicals for his musical comedy troup Starkids.
Rachel Bloom’s song is titled Super Friend and will be performed as a duet between Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl and Grant Gustin’s Flash. Pasek and Paul’s song is titled Runnin’ Home to You and will be sung by Grant Gustin. Maybe Barry will sing it to Iris?
According to Buzzfeed, Rachel Bloom said in a statement:
As soon as she heard the two series were doing a musical crossover, she e-mailed The CW president Mark Pedowitz, who connected her with the shows’ executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. “I immediately offered them my services,” Bloom wrote. “As soon as they picked one of my song ideas, I hopped on the phone with my old Robot Chicken boss Tom Root and we brainstormed and, based on that brainstorm, I wrote up the song ‘Super Friend.’ I am so excited to contribute more to the upward trend that is musicals in television and film. Music can be one of the most amazing and efficient forms of storytelling and character development. Also, it was really fun to write a comedy song for two superheroes.”

Bloom has been songwriting and creating music videos since her college days. Her music videos are up on her Youtube channel, racheldoesstuff. She’s also one of the main songwriters on her critically acclaimed TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
The current musical trend in TV is so exciting! Musical series and episodes have taken a long time to catch on, and it’s taken a long time for producers and writers to figure out how to make them work. The quality has improved for the most part though. Hopefully we won’t be subjected to something like the Grey’s Anatomy musical episode again anytime soon, where people who have no business singing are doing so for no reason, in a serious setting where it doesn’t make sense. (Sara Ramirez can, of course, sing anytime she wants.)
Also singing in the crossover are Berlantiverse cast members Jesse L Martin, Carlos Valdes, Victor Garber, John Barrowman, and Jeremy Jordan.
The main crossover episode is an episode of The Flash titled Duet, which airs on March 21. The crossover will be set up on Supergirl’s March 20 episode.
