Wednesday Night Is the Night!

Here’s another round of videos and articles on  Hairspray Live! before it airs on NBC Wednesday night, December 7, 2016 at 8:00 PM ET.

The Hairspray Live! soundtrack album was released on Spotify a few days ago and it sounds amazing. Maddie Baillio, the newcomer who plays Tracy Turnblad, is a real find. There are surprises that are different from both the stage show and the movie. You can listen to it by getting a free Spotify account, or hear samples at BroadwayWorld.com.

We have a new set of photos for you today from Lena Hall’s last show starring as Hedwig in LA on 11/25/16. Shannon Conley was her Yitzhak, and the usual members of Tits of Clay played Hedwig’s band, The Angry Inch. Lena makes a glamorous Hedwig, doesn’t she?

The Hedwig and the Angry Inch National Tour continues performances around the country through July, starring Euan Morton as Hedwig and Hannah Corneau as Yitzhak. Tits of Clay and all of the stand bys and understudies are continuing with the tour.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 6: Who Needs Josh When You Have a Girl Group? Recap (VIDEO)

Tonight, Paula feels trapped..Oh wait.

While we wait for the firefighters to get Paula out of the bathroom, let’s recap episode 6. After burning down her old place (along with Josh and Greg’s stuff), Rebecca has moved into a new place. But, whoops, she didn’t notice that underneath that very thin new layer of plaster, she’d chosen an infamous murder scene for her home. The renovations that hid the crime scene start crumbling and falling down around Rebecca just as fast as they were put up. Sort of like Rebecca’s life. Nearly everyone in Rebecca’s life ends up at the apartment before the night is over. It was an intense episode as the characters faced some hard truths about themselves.

Frozen Broadway Musical Dream Cast Part 4: Olaf, Oaken, Grandpa Troll and Bulda Troll [VIDEO]

                        Part 1     Part 2     Part 3

This is the final part of my series of posts on the metawitches dream cast picks for the Frozen Broadway musical, which opens in August 2017 at the Buell Theatre in Denver, CO, before moving to Broadway in Spring, 2018. This time, we finish up with a few of the minor characters.

I’d love to see Olaf the snowman played Tituss Burgess. He originated the role of Sebastian the Crab in The Little Mermaid on Broadway (below he Sings Under the Sea). He’s currently on the Netflix show The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but that show has a short season and films in NYC, so in my dream world they’d work around his schedule. In the second video his Kimmy Schmidt character, Titus Andromedon, auditions for Hamilton. Spoiler: He hasn’t seen the show and doesn’t rap.

The second video is a longer interview with some of the cast on The Today Show, including Derek Hough, Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Martin Short, and newcomer Maddie Baillio. It also includes more clips from the show.

Finally, here’s a brief video of Kristin Chenoweth in her role as Miss Baltimore Crabs herself, Velma Von Tussle. She looks like she’s having a ball hamming it up like the role requires!

Moana Review: Female Bonding With An Unnecessary Male (Spoilers)

I saw Moana on its opening night! Very exciting, and for some reason there was practically no one in the theater. Night before Thanksgiving, I suppose?

Overall, I liked it. I found it emotionally moving, and the spiritual tone was enchanting to me. It is beautifully animated, and the music is absolutely beautiful (not surprising to me, as Lin Manuel-Miranda, writer and original star of Hamilton, cowrote the music). I found the messages and themes meaningful. There were a few times when I was almost brought to tears. That said, I do have some major complaints, most of which regard Maui, which I’m trying not to let color my entire interpretation of the movie.

Spoilers below! (And an unintentionally long review.)

Hairspray Live! You Can’t Stop the Beat (Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Performance)

This video ran during the parade. The song starts at about 1:15.

It looks fantastic!!

There’s nothing we don’t love about this performance. The cast all seem to fit, in the brief moments we get with them. Standouts are Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad, Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Mabel, Derek Hough as Corny Collins, and Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton. But where’s Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad? We do get a glimpse of him in the teaser trailer released earlier in the week.

Frozen Broadway Musical Dream Cast Part 3: Kristoff and The Duke

Time for the next round of Frozen dream cast choices! Why, you may ask, is there a video of Aaron Tveit and Gavin Creel singing a song from Rent at the top of a post about Frozen? Well, that’s a very good question. Both metawitches have kind of an obsession with this video, and since these boys are alternate choices for 2 dream cast roles, it seemed like the perfect time to pull it out. Where better to put it than right at the top? (I admit, I’ll likely pull it out at the slightest provocation. Be prepared. Or afraid.)

Frozen Broadway Musical Dream Cast Part 2: Elsa and Anna

Last week, in part 1, we lobbied for Santino Fontana to reprise the role Hans in the Broadway-bound Frozen musical. Today we’ll look at choices for Elsa and Anna.
