Why Does Metawitches Keep Writing About Diversity and Violence Against Women When I Just Want to Read a Recap?

Because life is political, so is entertainment, and so is our blog. Because we know that the creators of the shows that we love can do better. If no one points out where the issues lie, how will they know where they need to improve?

We live in the real world, where mass media has an effect on people’s attitudes. It’s important to examine closely exactly what we’re being shown and what messages are actually being delivered. It’s the only way that change happens.

Whenever we start analyzing how a show is doing in regard to its male/female ratio and other forms of diversity, and compare how characters from different demographics are being treated, we are always met with the response:

But aren’t the male (and white) characters being treated the same way as the women?

This is where attention to detail becomes important, plus the ability to count, and the ability to distinguish between a named character and a background character. When we’re discussing violent acts, this argument is frequently made, because there will be so many more men running around on screen than women that, of course, in raw numbers, more violent acts are happening to men than women.

Let’s break this situation down.

Time for an update on Netflix’s cyberpunk bodyswapping series Altered Carbon, which got off to a slow start, but, according to Google Trends, ended up being the 2nd most searched for TV show title of 2018. Netflix has been slow in releasing news about season 2, with little known so far about the plot or returning cast, but, finally, tidbits of information are starting to appear.

I don’t recognize the city, so if anyone does, let me know. Is it Vancouver or Seattle of the present or future? Somewhere else?

12/7/18: Added Avengers: Endgame trailer.  12/8/18: Added Umbrella Academy trailer. Also, added Emergency Awesome’s breakdowns of  the Marvel film trailers, including his ideas on the Spiderman: Far from Home trailer (no footage from trailer, but it was shown at Comic Con in Brazil).

Christmas has come early this week for trailers, with Marvel rumored to be on a spree and Syfy putting out 2 more trailers for their new show Deadly Class, which starts January 16th.

Before we get to the trailers, let’s start with the new poster for Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. It is so exciting to see her flying around, all powerful and lit up like Thor! You never realize how much you need to see something until you get it.

Glorious.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Renewed for Season 7, with One Agent Missing

Is This a Sign of the Effect That Avengers 3&4 Will Have on Agents of Shield?

This is good news! Disney/Marvel/ABC announced today that Agents of SHIELD has been renewed for season 7, even though season 6 won’t air until Summer 2019. Many had assumed that the shortened, 13 episode season would be the series last, so early confirmation that the network is still supporting its original foray into Marvel TV programming is very welcome.

Midnight, Texas Season 2 Episode 4: Sneak Peek (Video)

The Midnighters Find a Baby Weretiger

Minor book and show spoilers.

Calling all Midnight, Texas book readers! Midnight, Texas is doing the baby weretiger plotline from the books, with their own twist. For one thing, the baby is a girl instead of a boy, a welcome change in a show with too few female characters. For another, the Rev isn’t around to help raise the baby. Even if he returns, he’s no longer a weretiger, so he’ll be of little help in controlling the child.

My next question is, will the other character who came to Midnight as part of this plotline join the cast soon? This character was also part of the Sookie Stackhouse books, but was notably left out of True Blood. If they follow the books, this addition would bring a romantic shake up to the town that it could use right about now.

Travelers: Netflix Announces Release Date for Season 3

SwirlyTravelersS3Poster

After what feels like a very long wait, but actually wasn’t, Netflix has FINALLY announced the release date for season 3 of their science fiction time travel series Travelers. Prior seasons of the show, which stars Eric McCormack, were shown weekly on the Canadian network Showcase before being released all at once to the rest of the world on Netflix. After Showcase decided to back out of its part in producing Travelers season 3, Netflix took over production completely, so everyone will get the show at the same time this year.

And when will that be? I’ll let the Travelers Twitter do the honors:
