Riverdale Season 1 Chapter One: The River’s Edge

rvd101archverjugbet

Riverdale is the new CW Twin Peaks lite teen mystery drama from Greg Berlanti, of the DC Berlantiverse, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, writer for Glee, Big Love, Supergirl, Marvel Comics, and Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics. The adult cast is stocked with veterans of teen and science fiction shows, such as Molly Ringwald, Skeet Ulrich, Luke Perry, Robin Givens, and Tom McBeath. One, Mädchen Amick, is an actual Twin Peaks cast member. So, the show starts with a great resume and critics have given the pilot great reviews. For myself, I’m a little burned out on high school dramas after five years of The Vampire Diaries and having been one of the few who stuck with Glee until the bitter, bitter end. I loved Twin Peaks way back when, though, and I do still love a good twisted, quirky, potential cult show in the making. So, what the heck, let’s give it a shot.

They start right off with their homage to Twin Peaks. This not a coincidence:

The settings for both shows are very similar, small towns in the Pacific Northwest where nature is still rugged and wild. The rivers rush, the mist creeps, the mountains loom, and the forests are dark and dense with towering, dripping evergreens. This is not a place where man has tamed nature. The outdoors is a character, and potentially a villain.

In fact, Jughead, our narrator, begins by telling us about the mysterious death of Jason Blossom, the Laura Palmer of Riverdale. Kudos to everyone involved for not making him a blonde female. The Blossom twins, Jason and his sister Cheryl, who are both redheads, drive out to Sweet Water River dressed in white and holding hands, to take an early morning boat ride on July 4th. Nothing unusual in that, right? Before they get in the boat, Cheryl asks Jason if he’s scared. Jason shakes his head no. They get into the boat, and Jason rows them out into the middle of the water, while Cheryl sits with her gloved hands primly in her lap. Moments later, a gunshot fireworks thunder loud sound is heard.

Agents of Shield Season 4 Episode 11: Wake Up Recap

aos411yoyophil

In this episode, we find out exactly when and how Agent May was switched with the LMD. LMD May realizes what she is, but also realizes she can’t do anything to change Radcliffe’s plan for her. Coulson tries a reckless plan in a bid to gather more information about Nadeer and the Watchdogs, but it fails spectacularly, revealing that SHIELD has a mole. The title of the episode is a red herring, in many ways. Characters think they’ve woken up and figured out the truth, but it’s another lie, or only a partial truth, or they can’t use the truth to take the kind of action that they need to. The truth doesn’t always set you free, especially in government work. Especially if the government you work for is the federal government.

It turns out that May was switched with LMD May at the beginning of episode 8, The Laws of Inferno Dynamics, 5 days ago in AoS time. I remember thinking that she disappeared from the episode for a long time. It’s good to know that she hasn’t been held hostage and drugged for weeks, but 5 days is a long time for her body to be abused like that.

Mace assigned May to go get Aida to help take down Eli Morrow. Radcliffe called Aida and activated a protocol within her instruction files after he found out May was on her way over to his house. When May got there, Aida sedated her mid-conversation. She downloaded May’s memories, personality, and whatever else they can get out of the original’s brain into LMD May, who Radcliffe already had ready and waiting. Aida switched May’s clothing over to LMD May, did her hair and makeup, then turned her on. LMD May picked up the conversation exactly where it had left off before the original was knocked out. Creepy.

Agents of SHIELD: Who Is The Superior?

enadeer

On Tuesday night’s episode of Agents of SHIELD, Wake Up, Senator Nadeer, one of the high-ranking members of the anti-inhuman group the Watchdogs, tells Dr Radcliffe that in order for her organization to offer him protection, he has to meet The Superior and gain approval. We’ve been teased with the title of The Superior a few times, but haven’t been given a name yet. You can hear the capital letters in the title. They’re making such a big deal of it that it’ll be a let down if it’s not someone we’ve met before. Who’s still alive or easily revivable that would take the Watchdogs side? We haven’t had a movie crossover in a long time. It would be amazing if it was Thunderbolt Ross/William Hurt. William Hurt has no problem with doing TV, and has said that he loves playing the character. General Ross is the current, or most recent former, Secretary of State (if the MCU also had a presidential election in November, and President Ellis has finished his 2nd term). He’s in a perfect position to be The Superior. That would also quiet down some of the uproar about the movies not acknowledging the TV shows. Granted, it’s still within the TV show, but given the way movies are made, this is a reasonable compromise.

No Tomorrow Season 1 Episode 6: No Debt Remains Unpaid Recap

not106eviexavmomdad

Evie and Xavier start the episode with the sacrilege of destroying a ceramic lawn gnome. I know it’s not cool to like gnomes, but Amelie’s dad and I have a thing for them, ok? It’s hard to watch one be murdered in cold blood. They also cross two more items off of the apocalysts: #124) Lawn Bowling and #281) Break stuff for the hell of it.

Evie stops by her parents’ house and discovers that they’re getting ready to rent it out. Dad’s new acting career isn’t taking off as quickly as they’d hoped, and finances are getting tight. Evie thinks about it overnight, and decides to cross #58)Repay Mom and Dad off of her list by asking them to move in with her. Mom and Dad both seem cheerful about the move, but it turns out that Mom is really worried. She’s upset that Dad quit his job and put them in financial jeopardy without talking to her. She doesn’t want to say anything to Dad, though, because he’s so happy that his aura is yellow! Yellow, Evie!

Supergirl Season 2 Episode 9: Supergirl Lives Recap

spg209monelkara

And, we’re back. That felt like a really long break. Let’s jump right into the action. Kara’s chasing criminals in a van. She catches the van and driver after an honest to goodness firefight between their gun and her eyeballs. The accomplices have gotten away, so it’s up to The Guardian to catch them. But one slips past him, so Winn becomes the C team. He opens his van door and smashes the thief in the face. Score! But he celebrates too soon, and with his back to the thief. No, Winn, no. Never turn your back until you’ve secured the prisoner. The thief teaches Winn this lesson, but James/Guardian rescues Winn just in time.

Kara’s not okay with having an unapproved B team helping her out. She could have gotten everyone on her own. He took away half the fun, damn it. Alex tries to help, but they end up giggling over Alex’s new girlfriend instead. The next morning, Alex and Maggie are also all giggly and cute and happy over the new girlfriend thing.

Darren Criss Joins Supergirl/Flash Musical Crossover as the Music Meister

blaineseb Ha! I knew Berlanti and Kreisberg couldn’t stay away from Darren Criss forever. The producers of the four DC ‘verse shows on The CW have an affinity for casting Glee alumni (Melissa Benoist, Grant Gustin) and Michigan State/Starkid alumni as well (Carlos Valdes, Andy Mientus). Darren is the pinnacle of that trend, fitting both groups.

The Flash and Supergirl, starring Gustin and Benoist, are doing a musical crossover which will air Monday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 21. Most of the crossover will be on The Flash. Supergirl will probably get just enough to explain her presence in Central City, the way she did during the December crossover that incorporated all four Berlantiverse shows.

Winn/Jeremy Jordan will be crossing over with Kara/Melissa Benoist. Dr Stein/Victor Garber and Malcom Merlyn/John Barrowman will also be pulled in from other parts of the Berlantiverse.

No Tomorrow Season 1 Episode 5: No Regrets Recap

not105xaveviehijinks

Evie and Xavier begin the episode by crossing “shopping cart slingshot” off of Evie’s apocalyst, which is something you most definitely shouldn’t try at home. Evie ends up face first in beach sand, which, why?? At least end up in the water. This is one list item that didn’t look worth it to me.

Back home, Evie and Xavier look through their lists and make suggestions for their next adventure. Evie suggests #36) sleeping in a blanket fort. Her mother never let her as a child, because her mom was afraid she’d suffocate. That explains a lot. Xavier’s corresponding item is #544) have sex in a blanket fort. Because of course it is.

But first, Xavier wants to go back to Evie’s #17, which she keeps skipping over: Get Francis “Fern” Fernberger’s forgiveness. If Evie works on that one, he’ll do one of his hard ones. He’s originally thinking of #1259) Tell Evie how I really feel. Screw non-monogamy. But Evie’s phone blows up with notifications from multiple dating sites, so Xavier makes a quick switch to #88) Return Wes Hofley’s baseball card.

No Tomorrow Season 1 Episode 4: No Holds Barred Recap

not104xavevie

We start this week with Xavier’s apocalyst item #115)Try Bone Marrow. Evie refuses to even try, and not because she’s a vegetarian. Xavier equates the marrow to his philosophy of life. As in, suck the marrow out of it. We could probably end the episode here.

But, we don’t, of course, because even a low rated show has ad time to sell, and Joshua Sasse hasn’t taken his clothes off in a while. Whoops, there goes his hot coffee, down his front and toward his “nether regions.” Luckily, he and Evie are right next to a large public fountain, so Xavier strips and jumps in. Evie’s much more worried about the public scene Xavier is making than about the 3rd degree burns he’s trying to avoid. Personally, she’s giving me flashbacks to my mother-in-law, who was also always very worried about “what the neighbors would think.” Someday Evie will happily join the ranks of old ladies who enforce middle class social norms with an iron fist and a velvet glove. For now, Xavier asks if anyone in the crowd is bothered by him being mostly naked in the fountain, and everyone is happy with the situation. I’m quite okay with it myself. He reminds Evie that she’s going to miss out on a lot in life if she never pushes her boundaries.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 11: Josh Is the Man of My Dreams, Right? Recap

ceg211bexnatdance

Much to Dr Akopian’s dismay, Rebecca and Josh are still engaaaged. But, the devil winds are a-blowin’ into town and they bring all manner of strange thoughts with them. Well, I don’t think Karen’s thoughts actually got any stranger. Just even more inappropriately public.

I can’t help but feel like Rebecca’s taken a huge step backward this week, while Paula took a couple of steps forward. Rebecca ignores every warning sign the universe and her psyche send her, to the point where we get a brief reprise of You Stupid Bitch. That song is the lowest of low points for Rebecca, and it’s incredibly painful to hear even one line of it. Paula, on the other hand, learns some things from Rebecca and Daryl, and makes some positive changes in her own life.

It’s windy in West Covina, this week. Welcome to the desert, kids. Rebecca’s seen weather before, though. She’s all about her ring, which is a family heirloom, but it was bought back for her by Josh and he put it on her finger and proposed and she said yes OMG!!! High pitched SQUUEEAAALL!!
